Alvarez & Marsal hires energy M&A managing director
Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) continues to scale its corporate finance practice in the UK and EMEA with the appointment of Richard Cotterill as a managing director in London. At A&M, he will co-lead the practice’s energy team, providing M&A advisory with a particular focus on decarbonising energy generation, the energy transition and energy services.
Mr Cotterill has more than 15 years’ experience advising corporates, investors and developers across the energy sector. He has advised on a broad spectrum of energy transactions, including disposals, acquisitions, capital raising, partnerships and structuring. Prior to joining A&M, Mr Cotterill was a partner in KPMG’s energy corporate finance team.
Notable transactions he advised on include supporting Octopus Energy and its shareholders in raising $1.2bn of capital at a valuation of $9bn, advising OX2 on 15GW of offshore wind development partnerships with Ingka Investments (the biggest IKEA retailer) and advising the shareholders of Full Circle Wind Services on its disposal to Renew Holdings plc.
A&M’s corporate finance practice has ambitious plans to further expand its energy team across EMEA, with multiple new hires to follow in due course.
Commenting on his appointment, Richard Cotterill said: “The energy M&A market has experienced another year of robust growth, both in terms of volume and size of transactions, underpinned by widespread global commitments to decarbonise and continued strong investor appetite.”
“I’m delighted to join A&M at what is an exciting time for the energy sector, and for A&M as a business. A&M’s global reach, deep sector expertise and growth ambitions make it the perfect place for me to build an energy M&A practice to help businesses successfully navigate the complexities of the energy transition. I look forward to growing a market-leading energy advisory team and seizing opportunities to help clients achieve their energy transition ambitions.”
Jonathan Boyers, managing director, and head of corporate finance EMEA said: “I’m thrilled to welcome Richard as a managing director, who will jointly spearhead the growth of our energy capability. He brings a significant network and wealth of specialist sector knowledge which will be instrumental in driving our practice forward and delivering exceptional value for our clients.”
